A minor slope extends out a few thousand feet into the water here making it super shallow. Now, let's get this straight - I don't recommend swimming the usually-40-ish-degree Puget Sound. A Discover Pass is required to park a vehicle.Ī cool thing about the park for folks in the South Sound - there is sand on the beach (instead of the usual NW rocks)! People actually swim here in the summer. It's a pretty hilly park, heavily wooded, with a nice beach, lots of hiking trails, and a campground. We visited in the winter and the place was empty. The state park is on the Puget Sound, about 6 miles north of Tacoma and 20 miles south of Seattle, located in Federal Way. We visited the state park recently, not to be confused with Dash Point Park, located just south of this place (Dash Point Park has an L-shaped fishing pier…and is actually on Dash Point). Dash Point State Park might be a good place to camp on a multi-day paddle - it depends on your gear and how peaceful you want it. Because of all the parks, beaches, panoramic vistas of the Puget Sound, lighthouses, and 509 are considered the scenic route to anything in the south Seattle area. If you’re going in a huge RV, keep in mind that some park roads are limited and located in wooded regions. All of the park’s principal features, including the campground, boating areas, and picnic sites, are easily accessible via local roads. The park is accessible from Tacoma to the west and Federal Way to the east and is located off Interstate 5. Transportationĭash Point State Park can be reached by RV or car. The park is open all year, though some areas may be closed during the winter months. Snow rarely lasts more than a few days in the winter because the temperature is frequently above freezing. Marine creatures ranging from sand dollars, orcas, and sharks to sea urchins can be found in this diverse region. The Puget Sound is a body of water that carries ocean waters 50 miles inland from the Pacific Coast, but it is also much more. The campground and the park are situated on a bluff overlooking Puget Sound. The park was created and dedicated for the 1962 World’s Fair in Seattle. Since 1800, three missions have been taken place on the site. The trail network’s entrances can be found throughout the park in the North East Tacoma and the Federal Way. The park’s trails are popular among runners. Every year in the summer, Dash Boards hosts a competition. Skimboarders are frequently seen on the beach. Low tides disclose extensive expanses of beach on the point because of the patterns of tides, allowing plenty of area for visitors to enjoy. Popular Attractionsĭuring the summer, Dash Point State Park is the most amazing attraction for Federal Way residents. For the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair, the park was the most developed. In the late 1940s, the McLeod family sold the site to the State of Washington for a park. By 1877, the place had been given the name Dash Point on the maps. It’s uncertain where the representation Dash Point came from. The region was previously known as Fairview Beach, Woodstock Beach, and lson Landing, before becoming Dash Point. Beachcombing, fishing, swimming, birdwatching, windsurfing, skimboarding, and animal viewing are all available at the park, which includes over 140 campsites, 3,300 feet of shoreline, and 11 miles of mountain biking trails and hiking. Dash Point State Park on Puget Sound is a 161 ha or 398-acre state park in Washington that spans the King-Pierce county line.
